it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"A good cheerleader is not measured by the height of her jumps but the span of her spirit" -unknown.
My cheerleaders are athletes, students and role models. They work hard, they cheer harder.
"Cheerleading teaches us about being part of a team, the importance of working together to accomplish a common goal.
We learn to shoulder personal responsibility and how to cope with defeat and failure. It teaches how to remain focused on a task for the period of time required to achieve it. We learn about consistency and concentration, how to overcome weakness and go beyond our limits." -unknown
I work in a Title 1 school district. My school is a very low socio-economic status. Our students do not have the supplies that other districts have. My cheerleaders are incredibly hard workers. They practice 4 times a week for 2 hours a day. They cheer at games and participate in competitions. Due to state budget cuts, sports are receiving limited funding to purchase items needed for their teams. My cheerleaders are positive role models for their peers. They keep their grades up, they participate in fundraising activities. They encourage the fans to support the teams.
My Project
The resources I'm requesting for my team are poms that the school, unfortunately, is unable to purchase due to state budget cuts. My cheerleaders will use their poms at every game, practice and competition. The girls will learn responsibility for taking care of items that don't belong to them, but the school. They will be responsible for caring for the items and returning them when their season is over.
I had another project funded by donors for the cheer team at my old school.
I asked the team the following question "How did the new items make you feel?" They all thought for a moment, truly taking in my question. After a moment, the comments poured out of them! One comment though, choked me up, "[they] made the team look better" and it made them feel "like we are a rich school". I want my team to feel like they are in a rich school. I want them to feel special and respected as athletes.
