Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When most people hear "math" so many emotions come up. Math can be very intimidating, and it seems prevalent in many of my underprivileged kids. My hope is to build confidence in them while helping them learn the math. The resources that I give them lets them know they are appreciated.

My students come from very difference backgrounds.

I have kids from very affluent backgrounds and then many from poor, impoverished places. My school is about tradition. We try to make everyone feel welcome and valued. We can hardly tell the difference between the students as the motto goes, "once a Viking, always a Viking!" I love being a part of this school and I know that many of these students feel the same. It is a safe place for them, and for some of them, it may be the only safe place they have to go. We provide free snacks before and after school, free tutoring, and lots of different clubs, sports, activities for them to get involved with. We want them to be well rounded, not just scholastically, but socially and civic minded.

My Project

When the students come in to class, giving them all their own notebook, may not mean much to some of them, but to most of them, it will feel like the world. There are many of them who don't have a lot of money nor do they have much support at home. I hope to be a person that they see cares for them and wants them to do well. This would be a great start to the school year for them!

Students need to feel safe, valued, and appreciated, before you can expect them to work.

My motto is that relationships come first-math comes second. I hope to create a safe environment for all students. Being able to provide them with something as small as a spiral notebook would help ease some of their tensions as well as cultivate a family atmosphere as the entire class would be getting one. No one would feel left out and that's what I hope to accomplish!
