Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are little warriors, looking for a physical way to focus in the classroom. I am a kindergarten and first grade special education teacher in a high need community in New York. Our school is working towards becoming a strong presence in a neighborhood that is in transition.
My students are very young and very wiggly! They have shown a great interest in dance and movement and I think that yoga would be just the thing to help them use their bodies and become more focused at school. Even the students in my class who are less verbal can communicate their emotions through group movement. My students do not have recess, or gym and they certainly have a need for this physical outlet during the school day.
We need 10 yoga mats, one for each student, and a yoga DVD to guide us in this project. It will give my little guys a chance to move around during the day, and help all levels of functioning kids relate to each other in a common practice. By practicing yoga daily, it is my hope that my students will improve their ability to focus and as a result accomplish more during the day. The alphabet theme of the yoga DVD will also help to reinforce the letter work that we have been doing.
You will make the day brighter for my students. Imagine being 5 or 6 years old, and craving a chance to get up and move around. Using a daily yoga practice will also teach my students a valuable self management and relaxation technique that they can use throughout their lives. We absolutely appreciate your contribution, and even your taking the time to read this proposal. Imagine a class with tiny warrior positions and smiling faces.
