My classroom is filled with energetic, curious five and six year old students who are excited about learning. Our classroom "comes alive" each morning as they enter, full of enthusiasm, energy and joy.
The kindergarten students in my classroom come from very diverse backgrounds.
27 of my 36 students receive free/reduced lunch services since we are a Title I school. I have 8 students that speak English as a second language and 6 students enrolled in Exceptional Student Education programs.
My Project
My students LOVE to play. They especially love to "play teacher". During our last class meeting, we discussed how we could have fun learning about healthy habits. As students began to share their ideas, a common theme became very clear... they wanted to learn about being healthy by PLAYING and teaching each other how to make healthy choices. One of my sweet little girls innocently declared, "I know a lot about being healthy. I just want to sit in your chair and teach everyone Mrs. Taylor. I think I could be a really good teacher."
This project will allow my students to teach each other about healthy habits, while playing and learning their way to healthy, active lifestyles.
We will use the books provided by this project to learn about different types of movement, the important impact of movement on our bodies, and how our bodies work. Each student will have the opportunity to "teach" the class, during whole group instruction and play centers, by using the large chart stand as they draw and write about movement and health. Finally, my students will have the opportunity to PLAY! They will use the outdoor play equipment for daily physical movement.
As a community of learners, we will learn about healthy choices and the importance of 60 minutes of daily movement. We will put these healthy habits into practice by playing and moving outside each day and we will record our learning through drawing and writing on our charts as we teach one another!
