My Project
This year I am working with a group of extraordinary five year olds in an ICT setting. Our class is as diverse as New York City itself; multilingual, neurodiverse, and multi-cultural. And yes, each individual in our community fits the description of my project title, perfect, tiny, beautiful, and utterly unique.
In conceiving this project, I aim to celebrate the process a five year old goes through in observing the tiny, perfect, extraordinary details of the world that surrounds him or her.
I chose these material goods to celebrate the perspective and the pace of a five year old as she or he collects, documents, and transforms the world through a piece of writing or drawing. This may take shape as a chalk drawing in which each vein of a leaf is fastidiously outlined, or careful renderings of the minute details of our Cityscape. This may be the moment when a child carefully considers the lines and shape of the whorl of a shell, or in their own finger-print.
I've requested beautiful hardbound books to collect and to honor the work and moment-bound perspective of our small observers. I've requested vibrant crayons which might be mistaken for jewels, for them to make their drawings within these books. I've also requested an individual set of colored pencils for each child, which spans, rather than merely the primary colors, a true splendor of nuance and variation in color. Finally, I've requested a favorite text which in turn celebrates these moments of transaction with the environment that a child may experience when observing a leaf, a feather, a shell, or a bottle-cap.
Please consider matching your pace with my kindergarteners and celebrating the tiny, the beautiful, and the perfectly imperfect details of the world we move through together.
