Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Chalk and talk" classrooms no longer prepare students for the 21st century world of college and career. Learning how to brainstorm and engage in creative hands-on projects through the use of technology will prepare my students be productive and active in life after high school.

My students come to high school for the first time after remaining in junior high school for an additional two years, which means many of my students are disengaged and have been failed by those around them.

Being overage and undercredited means there is a lot of catching up to do both emotionally, and academically. Finding unique, and engaging curriculum to reinvigorate their interest and build up their sense of self-confidence and self-worth is key to making connections and resulting in success. My goal and drive is to address the whole child so that a community is built within my classroom and within the school.

My Project

The goal is to help students become actively engaged citizens who are informed and able to enact change, and this cannot be done if they do not have the technological skills required to succeed in the 21st century. For the first time this year, my students will be participating in a new blended learning curriculum, which contains an online writers notebook, and contains webinars to build upon skills. In addition, students will use a program called Compass as an addendum for regents preparation. Google drive will also be used as every student has a school Gmail account. Also, my school uses an online gradebook and my students will be given time to review their grades for all of their classes, identify work they need to make up, and use online resources such as a webquest, powerpoint presentations as a result of research projects, and to create surveys and other forms as part of real world practice for fact finding.

Equity is not an easy task especially when working in a small school with a struggling student population in which funding is not necessarily a priority because so many have written off the children we are trying to help.

My students can become agents of change, and every tool procured to help them learn and grow as individuals, young adults, members of communities, and students is a step in enhancing society as a whole. Providing technology via Chromebooks is one step in the right direction.
