Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I run an after school program called SWAT, Students Working to Advance Technology. They help keep our campus technology functioning smoothly and teach younger students a wide variety of technological skills. And I am now looking to include an opportunity for them to participate in a "Makerspace."
This team is a part of and serves a Title I school with just under 350 students.
We're a multi-generational school with a large Hispanic population. We set the bar high at our school and we are always looking for more ways to help our student population thrive.
My Project
Right now at our school we have no opportunities that allow students to get their hands on STEM kits, a Makey Makey, and an Arduino that allows them to build and create. I want them to take their learning outside the classroom and have meaning and excitement for what they are learning. Students will problem solve and come up with creative solutions by coding and building with the use of these materials. I want my small groups of students to become leaders and teachers for other students on how to use these materials.
Students need to have a safe space to try, fail, and improve their own thinking and creations.
These three items will help begin to give us the possibilities to meet our students passions in a new and exciting way. I am eager to start and share with them!
