Tinkering and STEM in a Collaborative, Creative Classroom

My students need activities such as Dash and Dot, Ozobots, LittleBits, an ant farm, a root viewing system, and rock identification kit to give them outlets to boost their creativity and problem solving skills while learning.

My Students

If you were in elementary school in the past six decades, you probably sat hard chairs, worked at desks, mostly in isolation, and completed worksheet after worksheet of skill practice. This is not the environment I strive to provide for my students. I teach with best practices, student voice and choice, and alternative seating options to optimize student engagement and focus. I encourage free thinking and look for creative ways that students can solve problems and work collaboratively to do so.

My students are a charming, deserving, active bunch of fifth graders in Oregon.

They are dedicated to learning and processing all the information we share each day. They are thinkers and my job is to get them to think even deeper. They are curious by nature and love a challenge. I want to continue to create and find engaging ways to challenge them.

My Project

Students will use Dash and Dot, Ozobots, LittleBits, an ant farm, a root viewing system, and rock identification kit for (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related activities. Students will be working in an environment that allows flexibility and creativity while promoting problem solving skills. They will build, construct, imagine, design, problem solve, collaborate, and create during our tinkering time.

These materials will allow my students the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity while supporting STEM activities by designing, coding, constructing, and putting science concepts into play.

It will also boost fine motor skills while promoting reasoning and problem solving as children create.
