My Students

My fourth and fifth graders are never short on curiosity, just the materials they need to begin exploring! Your generosity can help fire up our engines and steady our course as we launch a new unit in STEAM, not the water vapor, but the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math.

Thanks to the generosity of past DonorsChoose funders, my class is now deep into a unit on “Squirt Gun Science” where we’ve been measuring shot distance, computing averages, and “dissecting” the squirt guns to investigate pumps, valves, and fluid dynamics.

Now students are busy graphing and analyzing data they’ve gathered for publication as a scientific comic book! Reading about science or watching it on a video cannot replace the visceral understanding my students have developed by seeing and hearing and feeling the laws of physics in action, and a textbook is not nearly as successful at sparking the why, how and what if questions that drive innovation and engender the sort of creative approaches to problem solving today’s kids need to navigate and thrive in a tech-mediated world. It is this smoldering sense of wonder that teachers are always stoking, the tinder that fuels it, so precious, we hoard every splinter and shred...

My Project

...Toilet paper tubes (I have hundreds), old magazines (I have stacks), empty yogurt containers, plastic bottles, bubble wrap, egg cartons, broken clocks, and boxfuls of mis-cut keys that don't unlock anything except the doors to scientific inquiry. My students' science lab is quite literally made of garbage. And I'm not complaining, because for a lot of kids, that's the appeal! Rather, I'm asking for help stocking up on some of the costlier elements of a scientific education, bits and pieces that will transform my cabinet full of cast-aways into lessons on the engineering of simple machines. I recently completed a professional development course the Exploratorium Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception offers for teachers interested in recreating the museum’s STEAM-powered “Tinkerers’ Workshop” in their own classrooms. I’m eager to get started, but cannot proceed without the necessary supplies.

The Tinkerers’ Workshop approach to teaching STEAM concepts is hands-on and inquiry-based; supplied with the components like motors, circuit boards, wires, and switches, students are encouraged to tinker—to experiment, collaborate and reimagine—as they create multimedia sculptures that move and make noise.

Rather than a teacher-directed lesson, it is student interest and inquiry that power the Tinkerers’ Workshop, so every creation is a unique map of each child's path of discovery. Your generosity would help make empowering students through art a reality.
