Tinikling: The Filipino Dance

My students need Tinikling poles with an activity book, to authentically experience, enjoy, and engage with the traditional Filipino game song.

My Students

Cultural learning is an important aspect of elementary music education. Young children learn the best by physically engaging in a cultural experience. How could children learn about a traditional Filipino game without the authentic bamboo sticks?

My music students are enthusiastic, lovable children living just outside of Reno, Nevada.

Our school is primarily middle class, with just over 20% of students receiving free/reduced lunch. We also have a wonderful amount of cultural diversity and languages within our school. Oh, and, this school is large! At last count our population was 734 students. We have a strong community, so there is a sense of family, but the large student population allows great diversity. We may just be the Biggest Little School in Nevada!

My Project

Tinikling bamboo poles are used in the Filipino children singing game. Students will learn about the musical aspects of the singing game in addition to the strong rhythmic needs of the stick game. Students will then be able to connect their musical knowledge to the cultural aspects of Filipino history and social context. The icing on the cake will be the physical demands necessary for the stick game which involves students jumping over bamboo sticks!

Donations made to this project will purchase Tinikling bamboo poles for a large elementary.

The older students will quickly learn the game and may choose to include it in their Cultures of the World performance. Younger students will simplistically play with the bamboo sticks and watch demonstrations wide eyed. Please consider making this important contribution to over 700 students.
