My wonderful seventh graders and I were talking about the world in which we live. When I mentioned the recent death of Rosa Parks, many of them could not remember who she was or what she did. When I started giving them hints (1950's, the South, Segregation, Jim Crow Laws, etc.), many of them still did not know what I was discussing. How disturbing! I realize that I need to introduce them to this time in history with the novel “The Watsons Go to Birmingham? The story of how this family travels from the north to the south during the height of racial segregation and injustice is told from the point of view of a young narrator who is middle school aged. This novel chronicles the church bombing that killed four little African American girls. I would also like for them to understand the significance and importance of other world events such as the Japanese camps during World War II and the Holocaust. The novel, “Farewell to Manzanar? and “Night?are two novels that capture this time period with great honesty and detail, but without being overly graphic. All three of the novels mentioned are appropriate for middle school and will reinforce the dates and events that are learned in history/social studies, but also puts a "face" on these events. I sincerely appreciate your willingness to consider providing us with these resources. Thank you.
