My students need the Scholastic Branches “Missy’s Super Duper Royal Deluxe” and “Owl Diaries” Series to add interest and variety to our classroom library.
I’m fortunate to have a large classroom library for my students; however, it’s tired. It includes leveled books, tubs with books of favorite authors, books of different genres, and chapter books. But, because it’s tired, my students are beginning to tire of reading books from the library.
I’ve had my library for a long time, having acquired books secondhand at garage sales and resale stores, donations from parents, my own children's childhood books, and books I have personally purchased.
Many of the titles are dated, and hold little interest for my 1st graders. No interest means no reading. It’s obvious which books are read and which have never been touched. The books of interest are read, shared, talked about, dogeared, and in constant need of repair. Others are still neatly standing in the book bins, never having been moved the entire school year. Unfortunately, the latter group is getting larger and larger.
My Project
I want to refresh my library with new high-interest books, the Scholastic Branches “Missy’s” and “Owl Diaries” Series. Books in the Branches line are unique. Per Scholastic, they are, “specifically designed for newly independent readers who are ready to make the exciting leap from leveled readers, but not quite prepared for a traditional chapter book.” The text is easy-to-read, the plots are simple, context clues are used throughout the book, and there are still illustrations that help with reading comprehension. Branches are a perfect fit for 1st graders! I was first introduced to the Branches line by one of my students. He had read one of the Branches books and became so engaged and enthralled that he continued to read additional books in that series, then shared his enthusiasm with me and his classmates. This turned into a class read-aloud, and then, of course, everyone wanted to read that book. It was contagious! These are the kinds of books I want in my classroom library!
I would like to add the Scholastic Branches “Missy’s Super Duper Royal Deluxe” and “Owl Diaries” Series to my classroom to increase interest in my library again.
Increased interest means increased reading. Increased reading means increased achievement, but more importantly, increased enjoyment.
My students need a new variety of books that engage and hold their interest. Their interest in reading will be renewed and revived when my library awakens!
