My Students
And now it's time to.... TALK! In the Speech Room, I see students of all ages and abilities. Every student has their own unique goal they are working towards achieving. It is my job to keep them motivated to reach their speech and language goals, and to ultimately help them communicate.
I work with students as young as preschoolers to 5th graders at a Title 1 public school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Being a large school, I see about 60 students throughout the week for various speech and language needs. Many of my students are diagnosed with Autism. Some are working towards expanding their sentences to 2-3 words, whereas others are working on social skills or listening for details. I have other students who work on "smooth speech" to reduce their stuttering, and some who work on "good sounds" so that their peers and families can understand them when they speak. Despite their differences in ability, all of my students have at least one thing in common: they all show a desire to communicate.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help motivate my students to address their speech and language goals in creative ways. As a speech teacher, I try my best to keep our group activities fun and interesting for all of my students. Materials such as puppets and balls spark the students' interest in requesting these toys. Other students of mine need help in expanding their sentences and adding details, which is where a Storytelling Kit would come in handy. I enjoy thinking of ways to use the same materials for different ages and abilities.
Any and all donations to this project will go directly towards supporting speech and language development.
My students will benefit greatly from new materials and creative ways to get them talking!
