My Students
3rd Grade is such a challenging year as the kids are still very young (8-9 years old) but are asked to accomplish a lot at a very high level. This grade level is a huge transition year from lower elementary to upper elementary. I have 24 students; 17 girls and 7 boys. All of them are super sweet and eager to learn. More than 2/3 of the class are classified as English Language Learners (ELLs). Half the parents speak little to no English. Most are 1st generation immigrant families wanting better opportunities for their children. The school is also Title I, with 85% of our students qualifying for free/reduced meals.
My class loves to laugh a lot!
The students have a fun time playing during P.E. with games such as circle dodgeball, sharks and minnows, and steal the bacon. We also make time for mindfulness as we meditate through a program called Inner Explorer. We build community through morning circles as we share about each other's day and problems. We also share common experiences during shared reading time as we make connections with our reading. The kids here really enjoy school and this year's class!
My Project
The snacks purchased for this project will help students focus during the long school day. Most students wake up and eat an early breakfast before the start of school (8:30). So by 10:30, kids need time for a nice break during their morning recess. This is a time for students to play and eat a healthy snack before they have go back to the grind of learning! For students who don't bring snack end up asking their classmates for their snacks, which sometimes leads to conflict and hurt feelings.
But, with snacks being provided for, kids could focus on eating and being energized for school without worrying about the added stress of having no snacks.
Happy satisfied kids will then be ready to come back to the classroom to learn! Kids will feel cared for by their teacher not only intellectually but also physically and mentally!
