Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading can be challenging if the book is too difficult. If the book is too difficult, it could discourage a child to read. I would like to provide an opportunity for my students to feel confident of what they read and to not be afraid of reading. I teach first grade in Compton, California. The school is a Title 1 school serving almost 1,000 students. Many of my students do not have books to read at home. In my classroom, I have students who are low readers and some that are high readers. I need to be able to support each child by having the books necessary to support my low readers and challenge my higher readers. I would like to have a place where my students feel confident about reading by providing them with a library. This library is specially designed to each child's individual reading levels. When a student is confident enough to move up one level, they are welcomed to do so. This is a great opportunity to build self-esteem in reading. When first graders come into the classroom, they do not know how to read. When they leave first grade, they know how to read. I am preparing my students to move on to second grade and this is a great opportunity for them to excel. This is essential in reaching literacy and self-confidence in my students. This library will help my classroom immensely and will continue to do so for years to come. Thank you for your consideration!
