Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.
My English Language Learner students are resilient, resourceful and caring young teens.
Many of my students this year are recently arrived refugees from Africa and the Middle East. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto. These students face significant challenges, but they use their multiple talents and strengths to overcome obstacles.
My Project
There are so many ways for my students to use a weekly magazine like TIME For Kids. The subscriptions we are requesting will allow our newest arrivals to use pictures to build understanding of important world events.
Although my students are in middle school, some of them are learning to read for the first time.
The readability of this magazine and available online support makes it accessible for these students. The topics covered are engaging to students. We will build classroom activities and discussions around information learned by reading this weekly magazine.
I am planning to have my students create an online magazine of their own. TIME For Kids will provide a useful model.
