Help me give my students these wonderful specimens and a magnifying light for studying biodiversity as well as the giant microbes to add a little fun to the idea of taxonomy!

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I work for a southwest Missouri school that has had to undergo a lot of changes in the past few years due to a natural disaster and now a new building. Over 50% of our school population falls into the "free and reduced-price lunch" category, and we have quite a diverse population.
Science is such a fascinating subject.
I believe this, and I hope to convince my students of this. During the day, I have some classes that are required for graduation; in other words, all sorts of kids will be in that classroom. Many do not necessarily enjoy science; others just don't know a lot about it. Then, there are other classes in my day where students chose to take the course because they love science. Additionally, I have a science research class that we informally call "varsity science" because these are typically the driven, science-loving, problem-solving individuals of our school.
My Project
Help change daunting taxonomy into spectacular taxonomy! These real specimens and giant microbes will increase curiosity as well as understanding of the complex world of taxonomy, or the study of classification. Some of these specimens are of organisms not found locally. The skeleton will also allow students to see the similarities and differences between their skeleton and another animal.
Now, what does a game, a lamp, a phrasebook, and puzzle all have in common?
They will all serve my students in increasing knowledge, as well as help, write college essays. First, the magnification lamp will help students actually see the details of the specimens mentioned above (plus the other specimens I have collected over the years). The game will hopefully help students understand cell organelles better; this is a challenging subject and students find the material "boring." My expectation is that I can incorporate the game into a lesson and bring a little excitement to this topic. The puzzle... well who doesn't like jigsaw puzzles (besides my husband)? Evolution is a tricky subject in high school, and I think this would be a good visual to show some relationships between organisms, which does tie back into the taxonomy. Lastly, the phrasebook would help not only students spice up their writing college essays but also alleviate my frustrations of not knowing ways to describe students. A colleague of mine showed me this book and I immediately thought about the dozens of reference letters that I am asked to write. Additionally, I think my research students could benefit from this book.
