My Students

My students are a great group of kids. They are 9th graders with Autism and other developmental disabilities or special learning needs. They need more than a teacher who tells them what to do, they need an adult who will listen to them and work with them on their individual needs.

In the words of Temple Grandin, "Kids have to be exposed to different things in order to develop.

A child’s not going to find out he likes to play a musical instrument if you never exposed him to it."

My classroom assistant and I create a positive and interactive learning environment where our kids know that they are welcome, they are loved, they are appreciated, they are safe and they can succeed.

My Project

For my special needs students, it is often challenging to understand the plan of the school routine.

This classroom timer will be a great, visual, and subtle, way to reinforce classroom management.

Defining timed segments for each activity helps get students on board by signaling there's a beginning, middle, and end to the activity. The sensory activities are a great way to keep students who are ahead of others to stay focused.

A timer will provide a great visual reminder for students and will help them feel more in control than a teacher telling them that their time is up.
