Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I recently began an ensemble class for my middle school students. I attended a workshop and found a great program using what we have except we need to add a few drums to the mix.

We are a Title 1 school.

We are beginning our second year at the school. We are still building our basic needs. My students love music and like most kids love drumming. They can turn anything into a drum anywhere in the building. Wouldn't it be great to actually give them an opportunity to do the very thing they love to do.

My Project

My students will use the drums along with the Orff instruments we already have to create beautiful ensemble playing in our middle school. My younger students can use the drums to learn question and answer as well as call and response with the rhythm instruments.

We have been making the best of what we have.

Slowly our program is growing. We are hoping to add these instruments this year so we can expand our ensemble playing. My students have heard a recording of what I would like to do and we are looking forward to giving it a try.
