Time to Curl Up with a Good Book

My Students

My students are from a rural community in Wisconsin that is a short drive from a tourist town. Thus, many families have seasonal work and struggle to provide school supplies, books and other such items some take for granted.

My students are incredibly caring and hard working.

They understand the value of material possessions and thus, treat anything in the room with great respect.

Lastly, my students love reading. It baffles me at times how much they really do just want to curl up with a good book and read...and they are in middle school. I have an open policy when it comes to what you can "read for credit" in my class and it shows. The past few years they have grown into avid readers and thus, learners. The empathy and experiences they can gain from books fills my teacher heart and makes this job even more incredible.

My Project

Do you remember being in middle school? With school, extracurricular activities and our social lives, it seemed as if there was never any time to do much else. Nowadays, when children have spare time, they understandably spend it on social media or playing video games like Fortnite. The importance of reading seems to have taken a forgotten backseat in many of our children's lives. With a million different things to occupy our free time, we need to make sure that reading is included.

Reading seems to be a lost art.

Children need to have the choice in what they read whether that is online articles, magazines, books, comic books, etc. Reading is the foundation of every class. If children struggle with reading, how are they going to be successful in school? If they do not understand the content that is presented to them, it will likely translate to them having difficulties in that class.

It is important that children are allowed to read what interests them. So, rather than spending the night playing Fortnite, or snapping friends, carve out a ten to fifteen minute period with a good book. Get lost in the pages and let the author take you to a different world where knights slay dragons, murderers are caught and love conquers all.
