My Project
I am an Intervention Specialist that team teaches middle school math in an urban district. I advocate for creating a space where our students feel calm and safe so they can achieve their best on a day-to-day basis. The physical learning environment plays a vital role in how students feel they can approach learning. Providing our students with access to flexible seating options like portable lap desks, a large rug, and comfy chairs will give them a chance to remain engaged and to be successful throughout their day.
Helping add resources to the environment, such as seating, fidget bands, and light covers, will provide students with a peace of mind when coming into our classroom.
Social-emotional health is a crucial piece in learning how to be a successful middle school student. Taking care of their physical needs is important in order to help reduce behavioral issues and get them to engage in a lesson so they can master the information they are learning. Studies have shown that providing students with flexible seating options allows them to be more successful with their learning. A flex seating classroom will improve focus for students, allow them a choice in their workspace, and provide movement that is appropriate in the classroom setting all while keeping them engaged in the lesson.
