Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the students sometimes "left behind" because of tight public school budget cuts, state "pork" project vetoes, and limited literacy of their working class families. I teach two rooms of about thirty sixth graders each in the inner city of Chicago. These students arrive one to two reading levels behind each September. My job is to somehow increase their reading abilities by three levels sometimes. At times, they arrive not knowing that Chicago is a city in the state of Illinois, or unable to identify major world events that may directly affect our nation.
With limited funding, teachers work with the basal text book series and some novel sets. We often have to reach outside to the community and organizations to acquire grants for additional text and materials, since city school budget is limited.
I receive $100 a year to cover classroom materials. After replacing an overused electric sharpener, augmenting my classroom library with new books of student interest and basic organizational supplies the kids often lack each year, it's obvious how that allowance does not last.
Students need access to text that uncovers current events at THEIR instructional or independent reading level rather than at a frustration level. At times, donations from local newspapers are appreciated; however, have inaccessible reading levels for my sixth graders. Obtaining 65 copies of TIME for Kids, written at 4-6th grade level, provides that accessibility my children need.
Students will critically read these magazines weekly to not only gain information on world events, but also to use as a model for journalistic writing. We will discuss events and issues in the world, devise our own opinions, and learn to debate these issues as well. Upon conclusion, my students will be more aware of current events and be able to discuss important topics with friends and family. In short, they will become more aware, and possibly more global than just what occurred on the corner of their neighborhood. This project will lay the groundwork for developing informed, contributing members of society.
