My Students

We are a Science & Engineering school with a focus on introducing our students to STEM. Our goal is to improve the lives of our students by preparing them for future careers in Science, Technology as well as advocacy & diplomacy. We service all students and currently several of our classes are ICT and 12:1:1.

Next year we are welcoming our first NEST program with a focus on educating students with autism.

This class will be an ICT class and all students will work collaboratively, engaging in several science & engineering challenges as well as learning about technology and being exposed to several STEAM concepts, as we incorporate Art into our STEM program.

Students in the 6th grade STEM will be studying aviation and following the timeline that begins with kite designs/creations in China, WWII airplanes in Germany and the work designed at NASA in the U.S.A. Students will research & design astronaut gear and will use a 3D printer to create the next space shuttle to reach Mars. Our classroom must design a "break area" in the classroom, in order to allow students an opportunity to calm down and refocus when they feel anxious.

My Project

This is our first year welcoming students with a diagnosis of autism. In order to prepare my ICT classroom to welcome all students I need to create a "break area" where students can request to take five minutes to unwind if they feel anxious or stressed. Students can often become nervous in a new location, and might need to remove themselves from their peers in order to catch their breath, and relax before continuing to do their work. The purpose of a "Break Area" or a "Chill Zone" is to allow students the opportunity to self monitor and resolve concerns that often lead to negative behaviors that can interfere with their learning.

I need to ensure that my room has a private area where students can sit, do yoga or do deep breathing exercises in private.

This area is the "Break Area" which will be located in my classroom.

Having the "Privacy Divider" will allow for the creation of the "Break Area", and using the rugs to sit or stand on will make it comfortable for my students to relax and practice yoga and other activities to help them to relax.
