Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I will be a first year, first grade teacher this fall at Jordan Community School in Rogers Park, Chicago. 95% of the students at Jordan qualify as low-income. I am excited about an opportunity that Time Magazine offers. Time has created Time Magazine for Kids so that kids of all ages and reading levels can keep up with and be informed about current events. In elementary school, nonfiction reading can be forgotten about with all of the great fictional children's literature. Students are too often left unprepared to read nonfiction and textbooks as they get older. I want to make sure that does not happen for my students by giving them experience with nonfiction reading. I also think it is very important to teach students at a young age about the value of staying informed with what is going on in our world. I look forward to reading and discussing these magazines with my class each week. I plan to use Time for Kids to teacher nonfiction reading and writing strategies, but also to teach students how to use higher order thinking. Discussing events that are happening in our country and other parts of the world will allow me to teach students to analyze, question, apply, and evaluate what they have read. Hopefully an awareness of the world around us will encourage and develop thoughtful citizens!
