My students need games and books to target their speech and language goals. We would like a Magnetic Calendar, Pizza Play Food Set, Puppets, I Spy Books, and Don't Spill The Beans Game.
My students are a group of creative, imaginative, and active children. They all receive speech and language therapy due to a deficit in various areas including speaking/listening, reading/writing, and social skills.
Imagine not being able to successfully express all of your wants and needs or understand directions given to you.
Now, imagine those struggles in an environment where your teacher doesn't speak your language. These are the struggles that my students who receive speech and language services, and who are also English Language Learners, face on a daily basis. Many of my students come from immigrant families who value education greatly. However, many of these students are raised by grandparents, as their parents work long hours, in order to provide for them. Therefore, many students have had limited language experiences, such as going to the library, or having bed time stories read to them.
Being a first generation American, from an immigrant family myself, I understand the struggles they experience. I have been blessed with the opportunity to give these children the best, and I have no intentions of giving anything less.
My Project
They say kindergarten is the new first grade. Public education has become increasingly more demanding for students and in many schools, children have very little play time. This is such a shame because children can learn so much and develop better language skills through play.
As a school-based speech and language pathologist, I strive to make speech and language sessions an opportunity for my students to learn and have fun while doing so.
With board games and books, students can learn socialization skills, such as turn taking and sharing as well as language skills, such as describing and comparing/contrasting. Students can also utilize these games and materials to learn sequencing skills by learning and explaining how to play the game. Rather than endless drilling and worksheets, games and books allow students to learn creatively and playfully.
