Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a high poverty school in North Hollywood, CA. We have a very diverse student population. I have been a first grade teacher for the past 19 years, and recently made the move to Kindergarten. It is so amazing to see the excitement in these 5-year-old faces every morning, waiting to see what the day has in store for them.
I am very excited to begin this new adventure in Kindergarten, and can't wait to help set the foundation and create a life-long passion for learning that these little ones will carry with them all throughout their academic career.
My Project
I would love to provide my Kindergarten students with weekly Time for Kids magazines that focus on science and social studies. Throughout our day we spend so much of our time on language arts and math, that we barely have time to squeeze in all of the other subject areas.
These readers would be a nice addition to our classroom routine, and an easy way to address a variety of interesting science and social studies topics that students enjoy.
There are also additional online resources that we can access and use for classroom discussion.
Time for Kids magazines will also help elicit conversations at home when students share them with their families.
