Our classroom is full of hard working kids that are preparing themselves for a dual enrolled experience at the college. They work hard every day and need the opportunity to release some energy on the sports fields.
We are an open enrollment public charter school.
However, our students rise to the top due to the competitive nature of the program. Their incentive to earn an AA degree by the time they graduate high school makes the hard work worthwhile. In their H.O.P.E. class, they get a chance for some exercise and fitness, but they need more. Our after school programs focus on what they are interested in: from academic challenges to cooking class to an intramural sports league.
My Project
Last year, we experimented with intramural teams that encompassed a wide range of sports and activities. We often utilized equipment from the college or items brought in by teachers and parents. This year, we want to solidify the team sports by focusing on one and then expanding. The current passion followed me from Trinidad; Rugby! While avoiding the contact nature of the sport and adapting to a touch version, it still requires great physical fitness and training. The rugby balls, pump, and bag are necessary for game days. The pads, ladders, parachutes, and medicine balls are essential to develop the skills. The training should be as much fun as the matches.
Donations are so important when trying to start a program that is out of the box.
Rugby is not a traditional high school sport so the equipment is not readily available. In addition, being at a school that does not have a traditional sports program or a weight room, limits us in the amount of exercise and sports equipment that we have available. The students will get a chance to experience a great sport, competition, teamwork, and the ever so important matter of getting outside and being active!
