When I moved from 3rd grade into 2nd grade I had no idea that there were no science and social studies books for 2nd grade. Text books can be quite boring anyways. Luckily for our science kits we have some basic magazines that are based on the current learning. Extra resources would be fantastic!
My teammates and I truly want to help our students learn in the best way possible!
We are located in a lower income area. The school is title one with most students getting free/reduced lunches. The school provides free breakfast to every student. My students struggle with poverty every day. There are students who have soles of their shoes falling off, torn and stained clothing and no money to bring a snack for snack time. These students need an environment where they can learn real world information in a relevant way.
My Project
All three classrooms will use the magazines and the online resources weekly. The students will keep the magazines in their desks and we will study them in science, social studies and language arts. Students will have access to them at all times. We will use the information and align it with our standards. The students will be excited to have real world text in their hands. They can use it, possibly close read with it and enjoy it.
Students in this type of environment often do not get access to these enriching topics as seen in Time for Kids except for at school.
Currently, we do not have text books for science and social studies. It would greatly help the students to have these enriching magazines. The students will want to study the information and possibly find an area of interest that could spark a passion.
