Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

During the year, I asked my students what they wanted to learn about: How Russians survive in the snow, about dolphins, how to cook, etc. My students lack some of the experiences and knowledge beyond our own area but have the desire to learn about so many things.

Our school is a Title One school, meaning the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

My students are predominately from low income areas and despite living in coastal Florida, some have never been to a beach. Some do not have books at home. My students are very eager to learn and desire to learn about things that are new and different.

My Project

I hope to broaden the students' reading experiences with a different source of text. Time for Kids magazines include nonfiction reading on topics across all subject areas and events across the globe. Students will be able to learn about current events, such as the Olympics, as well as natural sources of energy being tested worldwide. These topics will spark amazing classroom discussions and can lend themselves to interesting projects and related activities.

In the past, I have not been able to afford subscriptions of this type but through the discovery of DonorsChoose.org, I hope this will become an additional resource for my classroom.

This donation can lead to student-driven interest in related hands-on projects and provide a base for future learning. Thank you for your consideration!
