Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These students are a diverse group of 4th graders. They are 9 and 10 years old and there are about 17 boys to 11 girls in the class. These kids are very bright, with about half the class almost above grade level as far as academics. 99% of them are Hispanic and most of them are bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish. The majority of these kids qualify for free and reduced lunch, as many come from low-income, single-parent families. The neighborhood around the school can be described as "rough", however these students are anything but that.

These kids are truly that: kids.

They have huge imaginations and love to share stories. Because they do not have access to technology or even books at home, they relish reading and using the computers at school. Math is their favorite subject: on the first day of school, the first thing they asked is "When do we get to learn math?"

Some of these kids have had many ups and downs in their lives; things I could not even imagine happening to me as a child. They continue to come through everything they face with dignity and strength.

My Project

These students love to read about the world around them. Time for Kids articles targeted to their grade level and age will peak their interest. I, as their teacher, will be able to use these articles to introduce students to topics outside of our regular class curriculum. They will get to know other cultures, see world events unfold, and learn about science and social studies through what they read with Time for Kids.

The pictures, interesting facts, and engaging articles in Time for Kids will strengthen their love of reading and learning!

I can also use these articles to spark writing ideas and projects, as well as class discussions about the topics within the articles.
