My students are a diverse group of 4th graders. They are 9 and 10 years old and there are about 17 boys to 11 girls in the class. These kids are very bright, with about half the class almost above grade level as far as academics. 99% of them are Hispanic and most of them are bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish. Many of them come from low-income households, with some single-parent families. The neighborhood around the school can be described as "rough", however these students are anything but that. They have huge imaginations and love to share stories. Because they do not have access to technology or even books at home, they relish reading and using the computers at school. Some of these kids have had many ups and downs in their lives; things I could not even imagine happening to me as a child. They continue to come through everything they face with dignity and strength.
