Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is a program improvement school because we have failed to meet our achievement goals in language arts. On the whole, our students in the 5th grade particularly struggle with reading comprehension. Recently, I have read several chapters within the professional instruction book entitled "Strategies That Work." There is a particular lesson that I would like to try with my 5th graders. The lesson targets reading comprehension specifically in nonfiction readings. "Time for Kids" magazine will serve as a reading resource for my students to apply the strategies from the lesson. In the lesson, I will model using the strategies that good readers use when reading a piece of nonfiction writing. The students and I will read along an article from "Time for Kids" and record our facts, questions and responses to what we read on our class chart. As a class, we will discuss the article and share our facts, questions and responses. Children will then do the same in pairs with another article from the magazine. Later, as students become more proficient in applying these three strategies, they will report to the class information about other articles they read in future editions of "Time for Kids." I teach thirty-one students. They would greatly be motivated to read and practice reading strategies with a magazine as interesting as "Time for Kids." As a program improvement school, we have improved in the last 3 years and but must continue to improve in order to meet our goal. I think that lessons with the magazines are valuable, efficient, route in the right direction. I really would like to enrich their reading experiences by providing nonfiction periodicals that pique their interest and broaden their knowledge. We will be very fortunate if the magazines are made available to us by your generosity. Thank you!
