My students are from Chicago by way of Bosnia, Mexico, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Albania (to name a few). I teach in the incredibly diverse Edgewater neighborhood. In my classroom of 25 students, 21 of them come from homes where English is not the primary language. These students are immigrants and want to know what is happening in the world around them. Time for Kids Magazine is an amazing way for students to read about current events while improving their knowledge of everything from geography to their skills of reading non-fiction texts. Last year my students jumped for joy when the magazines were delivered. Not only are there issues focused on current events, but also there are issues of the magazine focused on different countries around the world. Students are able to learn reading skills while learning about other cultures, and sometimes each other's cultures. By funding this proposal, my students would have a year's subscription to Time for Kids Magazine, something they all enjoy but cannot afford without the help of donors like you.
