My Students
My school district is a rich community filled with many ethnicities, languages and socio-economic backgrounds. My school is one that is low income and high poverty with all students receiving free lunch. My students deal with a good amount of adversity and their home lives offer much disruption, concern and need.
Entering our school each morning brings many a sense of routine, high expectation and support that so many of our students are yearning for.
Students come together to learn and have such a desire to read and surround themselves with great books. Our class read aloud is looked forward to each day and independent reading lets students go to places they are thrilled to be part of. We want to foster their learning, creativity, deep thinking about the text they read and to push their thinking beyond the text.
My Project
Time For Kids is an excellent news magazine geared with students in mind. The visuals, text features, text and magazine format allows for students to read about multiple topics at one time. Their view of the world around them is expanded and nurtured in an exciting and fun way.
Learning through current events in our world can expand a child's mind and thinking.
Many of my students don't see much further than their own "backyard". They are unaware of what goes on in the world around them and often do not have the opportunities or resources to have these experiences. Time for Kids will help my students to view topics around history, space, nature, science and SO much more. The articles are always engaging and lend themselves to much learning and appreciation. Students are often so intrigued that they seek out more information on a given topic. This energy and excitement for new learning is every teacher's dream.
Having a subscription to Time for Kids would allow my students to move outside of a book and experience a news magazine that is written just for kids! There are always extension activities included in each magazine and these often support additional reading, thinking around what they have read or writing around the topics they have learned about. I am hopeful that this magazine will give my students and me a fun way to learn about the world around us!
