My Students

My students attend a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York City. Our school is located in an area of the South Bronx with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch. They are a hard working group of first graders who are persistent, and determined to do well in school. They are a group of hard workers who need essential resources to help them do their best work.

My Project

By READING every issue of their TIME for Kids news magazine, my students will be challenged to analyze texts in the ways required by Common Core Learning Standards and the new social studies state standards.

The magazine, along with the globe, chart paper, markers and pencils will help prepare my students for the "real world" as they learn more about the location of places, along with the physical and cultural characteristics of those places in order to become global citizens in our increasingly interdependent world. The magazine rack and display will be used to display current and past issues of the magazine. These resources will enable them to respond in writing to the articles in the TIME for Kids news magazines.

These resources are needed now more than ever to help my students learn about other cultures, geography, science, and social studies concepts and themes. Please consider funding this project and help my students embark on a virtual journey around the globe to become citizens of the world.
