My students need to be up to date on current events. This can be made possible with a weekly subscription to TIME for Kids.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom involves reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I want my students to be more aware of what is happening in the world around them. My greatest challenge in getting them there is being able to provide them with age-appropriate real-world texts.
My students are hard working English language learners.
They are Mexican-American, Korean-American and Indian-American students. Being in the heart of Los Angeles, my students are growing up in continually growing urban neighborhoods. Their families work hard to ensure they have a high quality education by applying and sending them to a public magnet elementary school. Our school is a Title I school with 86% of the students receiving a free breakfast and lunch. The need for non-fiction texts is important for my students. My school focuses on health science and the body systems. Time for Kids offers a variety of non-fiction articles, including health and body.
My Project
My students will use their TIME for Kids subscription to read about what is happening around the world and in our country. We will use it at the beginning of the week as we read independently, in partners, and in small groups. Students will be encouraged to share the information with their families as they continue to use it for homework assignments and in class discussions.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by providing a global perspective of the world in kid-friendly language.
My students will learn the importance of social studies, a subject not often explicitly taught in the elementary grades. Donations to help fund a class subscription of TIME for Kids will help my students and their families feel more connected to the world; it will help support the development of students' understandings of their civic duties.
