My students need Time for Kids Magazine to read and learn about current events that are affecting their daily lives. They need to not only read fiction, but be exposed and discuss non-fiction readings also.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from low income families that are of Hispanic and African-American descent. Most of the students speak two languages and struggle with the transitions between the languages. Some students can not afford basic school supplies, get a good night sleep, concentrate on their educational success due to home issues that some adults never have to think about. It is my job to provide a safe and effective environment for a successful academic future.
I focus on each of my students' needs through small group and one on one work.
It is my goal to keep students engaged and focused while in small groups. I have to be very creative with this due to our schools limited funding for extra materials. These materials would help my students stay focused and productive during their center time.
My Project
Time for Kids will improve my students reading levels. They will be exposed to current events that may be effecting them or children around the world just like them. This can teach skills such as empathy, compassion, and caring for others. The students will be able to discuss current event issues that otherwise they may not even be aware of. These magazines will give my students an opportunity to read and draw conclusions based on factual articles. Each student will be able to defend their side with text evidence they find directly in the magazine article which will lead to wonderful classroom discussions based on non-fiction readings.
