My Students
My sixth and seventh graders are great learners and thinkers. They have great personalities and are curious about the world around them. Most of the students live in and around the South Bronx. Despite the trials and tribulations that many students have gone through in their short lives, they eagerly come to school because they know that it is a safe place where they can learn and grow. Many students come to school ready to learn academically and unbeknownst to them socially.
My Project
"Ms. L, why don't we learn about current events," one student asked me.
"We don't have time, I answered, knowing that I gave her a weak response.
"Well if we talked more about current events, then I would be more interested in Social Studies.
Her words pierced my heart.
I would use these Time for Kids subscriptions to engage my students with current events. As a Social Studies teacher, I should not only focus on the past, but on the present. Students see what is happening in the news and we rarely have time talk about what it. These subscriptions will help my students be in tune with the world!
