I am a Literacy Specialist at a wonderful elementary school located in an economically depressed community in the far reaches of northern New York. Seventy percent of the students in our school receive free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them come to us from a local housing project located nearby.
More than anything else, my students want to be successful readers and learners.
However, many of my students struggle with basic reading skills such as phonics, sight words, and reading fluency. In order to practice and reinforce those skills, I like to use fun and engaging reading games and learning activities that the children will enjoy.
My Project
I love to make reading games and activities for my students to play during their daily reading intervention sessions! I use materials such as index cards, printer labels, and glue to make their games. My students really enjoy colorful activities, so I color black and white games and activities with markers and crayons. Once they're finished, I laminate them and they're ready to play! I store the children's reading games in file folders so that they are easily organized in my classroom, and I use colorful Duck Tape to decorate the fronts of the leveled book bins my students use each day. I am requesting a variety of stickers, scratch-n-sniff bookmarks, and transparency paper for use with my classroom reading incentive program. I am also requesting a black stamp pad so that I can continue to make memory word bug jars for my younger students to use as they track their progress in reading.
Who knew learning to read could be SO much fun??
My students absolutely LOVE to work on their sight words when they play "Don't Wake the Bear!" and "Garbage Goblins." They work on their phonics skills when they play the "Super Top Secret Ballot Game" and "Word Snails." They work on their reading fluency with "French Fries" and "Chicken Fingers." The best part, however, is that when they're playing their reading games, they don't even realize they're working on their reading skills!
Your generous donation will provide the resources I need to continue making reading class a fun and engaging experience for each and every one of my students in the months and years to come.
