Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 7th grade students love to learn and enjoy challenges. Many come from impoverished backgrounds, which creates obstacles for them in many ways. Their background knowledge is often limited because their experiences with the world are restricted. It is crucial that they build their schema to be successful.

My 7th grade reading classes at TMS are focusing on informational text this semester.

I want to expose them to as many current, historical, and world events as possible. This will encourage text-world and text-text connections.

My Project

My students need to be exposed to more world and current events to build their background knowledge. Informational text is high-interest, but my classroom lacks resources for the students to access. Time Edge magazine would provide various nonfiction texts that are appropriate for middle schoolers, and my students would begin to approach those higher-level thinking skills.

Without resources to connect students to the outside world, they are not able to make the connections between a variety of texts.

Middle schoolers struggle with making inferences, which relies on a student's background knowledge. Your generous donation would help to improve the schema of my students, encourage life-long readers, and create more globally aware citizens.
