My students need resource books to learn about prehistory and the world's earliest civilizations. They need timelines to develop an understanding of time!
Do remember second and third grade when you or a friend were obsessed with dinosaurs or ancient Greece civilization? I want my students to develop a fascination with the past so they are able to develop a curiosity about life and cultures.
My students learned about the beginnings of the earth in our class the other day.
We talked about the formation of planet earth, the seas, and first life. My students were on the edge of their seat with enthusiasm for learning. My students are from a new charter Montessori school. They are enthusiastic first, second, and third grade learners. Every day 5-10 students ask me for a new lesson. They all are ready to learn.
My Project
I imagine my first grade students bringing out the guide to dinosaurs as they write up a history report. They will pick out their favorite dinosaur, sketch, read, and then write out whether it was a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore. They will write where it lived and during what era.
Then I expect to see my second and third grade students to become enthralled with a study on Mesopotamia. They will learn about the geography, time period, food, clothing, and customs. They will be able to use the timelines and books to develop a strong understanding of people and the past.
I think a part of teaching students about the future, is by teaching them about history.
They need to have the tools and resources to learn about past struggles and triumphs. The timelines will inspire their research and their understanding of the world.
