My students need copies of books for book club. Our neighborhood is a book store desert. Without the support of teachers and DonorsChoose.org in providing books, our students would not be able to participate.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My book club students are avid readers. They come from diverse backgrounds, but have a common love of reading. We want to reinforce and instill in our students with a lifelong love and appreciation of reading.
Coming together as a group to read and discuss novels gives our students an opportunity to express their unique perspective and learn from others.
Our school is inner city, lower socioeconomic status. Many of our students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and move on to college.
My Project
Not all students participate in the traditional high school extra-curricular activities. Book club is an activity that appeals to students who are more introspective. As a librarian, my goal is to inspire students to develop good reading skills for their present and future selves.
Participating in at least one extracurricular activity is shown to benefit students across the board academically.
They are more likely to engage with their teachers as partners in their education. These students have higher attendance rates, and lower failure rates. Participation in a group gives them a sense of belonging and someone to whom they are accountable.
One novel we are requesting is "The Sun is also a Star" by Nicola Yoon - 2016 National Book Award Finalist.
From the publisher, "Natasha: I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story.
Daniel: I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store--for both of us.
The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?"
