Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher at Siler City Elementary in North Carolina. My class is 95 percent on free lunch and 90 percent from minority groups (80 percent Hispanic and 10 percent black). The students are very respectful and caring with a wonderful work ethic. Many have come from troubled home lives and have many factors in life weighing against them. They love coming to school and are always excited by new experiences. I have three students who are learning basic English and many others who are in the more advanced levels of learning English as a second language. I also have two students who are identified with special needs. This resource will be an amazing tool to help both groups learn despite their difficulties.
After a wonderful workshop on VersaTiles, an unique tool used to let students practice various exercies in a fun, hands-on way, the staff convinced our school to buy each teacher the math start-up kit. The VersaTiles are a little kit which has 12 tiles, one side with a number one to twelve and the other side with a design. The black case has an answer slot for each of the tiles. When provided when the problem sheet, the child solves the first problem, finds that answer amongst the answer options, and then places the tile in the correct spot in the black case. When all twelve tiles have been placed, the child turns the whole VersaTile over. If the questions were answered correctly, there will be a pattern on the back matching the pattern on the problem sheet.
This tool, while confusing to explain, is an excellent resource for children. They absolutely love using them. They are truly having so much fun that they do not realize they are doing "work." The start-up kit our school was able to purchase has one book and a few VersaTile cases with tiles. While certainly a wonderful gift, only one to two children could work on the Versatiles at a time. I would like to obtain the Math VersaTile Kit, which has six copies of each of the eight books, and multiple VersaTile cases and tiles. This will allow more students to use these more frequently and allow the skills they are learning to be reinforced and mastered. With this tool, I have scheduled time during math class and centers time for each student to use a VersaTile daily.
This is an excellent resource for the students because they are able to self-correct. If they flip over the VersaTile and the pattern does not match, then the take out the incorrect pieces and try to fix their mixtakes. What a wonderful skill to teach children so early on. I am so excited to use the VersaTiles to help my students achieve success in such a fun way.
