My students need 10 pairs of steel scissors, 1 pack of exacto knife blades, 100 paint brushes, and 1 set of paint to create tikis out of recycled cardboard.
Using cardboard that we have collected, my students decorate our school library with colorful tikis that they have created.
Our school is a large suburban high school that serves students grades 9 through 12.
Many of the students love our 3-D Art & Design Class because it is a "right-brain" relief from the academic classes that they attend the rest of the day. I am proud of the beautiful sculptures that they create.
My Project
I am requesting 10 pairs of steel scissors, 1 pack of exacto knife blades, 100 paint brushes, and 1 set of paint to create tikis out of recycled cardboard.
Using the principles of art, the students will first draw thumbnail sketches of the tikis they want to make. Then using the scissors that we purchase they will cut out projecting pieces that they will glue to the cardboard. Next they will gesso the pieces and then paint with tempera. Students master the principles of balance, harmony, emphasis and unity when they create the tikis.
If we are awarded the grant, the supplies that we will receive will be used for many years and can be used for many other projects as well.
This project supports the California State Visual Standards for Artistic Perception and Creative Expression.
