The majestic tiger, one of earth's most powerful predators, numbers only in the thousands in the wild. We want to explore the story of the striped stalker. A collection of picture books will allow us to contrast fictional tigers with the gloomier reality of this endangered big cat.
My middle school Language Arts students begin the year reading years below grade level.
Daily reading is a cornerstone of our classroom. The wide range of readers in our classroom, including students who have never learned to read, reluctant readers, and strong readers who are just beginning to learn English, means that we need a wide variety of books to explore a theme together. We like to explore a common topic---but we need a lot of different resources to make a class exploration of any theme possible!
My Project
Each of the picture books in this collection features a tiger! My students will use these books to contrast the features of fictional tigers---sly, tricky, dangerous---with the reality of the few remaining tigers in the wild. For my new English speakers, the vivid pictures will support language development. Other students will be able to check out these books to use in a read aloud program with younger kids at home. There is something in this collection for all of the readers in my classroom.
Tigers have been in the news a lot recently.
The power of this threatened stalker makes reading about tigers a natural fit for middle school students. This collection of picture books will help my students explore important ideas about man's relationship with nature, as they strengthen reading skills and vocabulary. Please help us get started on an exciting new tiger unit!
