“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
I love this Stephen King quote. For many of the children in my classroom, reading is a challenge that they want to meet, but they struggle with it.
My classroom children are eager to learn to read.
They love to be read to and discuss what I read to them. We are completing a unit on Because of Winn Dixie. I was lucky enough to have a copy for each child. This allowed them to follow along as I read. Many children in my classroom don't have access to books outside of school.
Because of Winn Dixie is our first read aloud unit. They are learning to take notes and follow along when they are read to. I have been modeling "dumping your brain." When I am done reading I write notes on the board about what I read and thought was important. With a class set of Tiger Rising I will be assessing their "brain dumping."
The twenty-five copies of Tiger Rising will allow my children to follow along as I read.
This will help increase their word recognition and allow them to view themselves as readers.
