Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help bring chemistry to life for my 4th Grade STEM enthusiasts!

This year I would like to incorporate hands-on science experiments into our classroom as often as possible.

One way to bring chemistry to life is through tie dye!

This project will incorporate lessons on polymers, covalent bonds, and pH.

The lesson on polymers will explain why our shirts need to be made out of cotton. We will discuss cotton and how the plant uses cellulose, a polymer, for strong cell walls. We will learn about the properties of cotton and how its properties, including being absorbent, make it the best material for holding dye when tie dying. We will use fortune teller fish for a hands-on example of a polymer.

The second lesson will be on covalent bonds. We will discuss fiber-reactive dyes that are used for tie dying. These dyes are used because of the covalent bonds created between the dye and the cellulose in the cotton shirts. We will draw models of covalent bonds and discuss their properties, including strength.

The third science lesson will be in pH. We will discover what pH is and how it affects our tie dye shirts. We will learn about the basic solution we use to soak our shirts and how it will activate the cellulose, making the bonds with the dye stronger and the dye brighter!

Finally, we will tie dye! Each 4th Grade Chemist will be provided with a shirt and the materials needed to tie dye.
