This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 4th-grade students are the most amazing and resilient young people. We are a community of diverse learners that come from families dealing with low-income, high poverty, and homelessness. Many students have only been in the country for a few years, and several are refugees speaking limited English. Despite the challenges we face every day we have co-created a classroom that is a sanctuary for eager minds. We believe that diversity is our strength.
My students bring a rich tapestry of heritage and personal experience.
For many of my students, their basic needs are met through school: breakfast, free/reduced lunch, access to literature and technology, social and emotional health, a friendly smile and people who care. Their families and community do their very best to provide a rich educational experience and promote a bright future for each student. My students have big dreams and bright minds but are lacking the resources to make those dreams a reality on their own.
My Project
We need your help! Our classroom library needs a neutral makeover. Books are falling off the shelves and getting lost in oversized buckets. The supplies we are requesting will transform our library from a crazy mess of rainbow-colored buckets to a sophisticated and easily accessible resource. With buckets that are uniform in color, shape, and size our classroom library will become more easily accessible and organized. This will reduce the frustration students face when trying to locate a book, return books, and increase the longevity of our books.
Our classroom library is the heart of our classroom, it is where we discover ourselves in books.
Through reading, we: meet new characters, make new friends, travel to far off destinations, learn life lessons, and discover authors and genres we didn’t know we loved. The buckets will be fixed with labels that will support all students in visually finding and locating their next adventure.
