Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from an urban community in California. Seventy-five receive free or reduced price lunch. We lack materials and supplies because of major budget cuts in the elementary public schools, which has made it a bit difficult and has forced us to use our creativity to teach. I have a diverse group of energetic first graders this year. They range from a few high performing to majority of low performing students. Yet, I am determined to provide students with meaningful learning experiences where they can acquire life long skills to be successful individuals.
My Project
My first grade students need to learn how to be organized. I need mailboxes, pencil boxes, and binders to teach them that there is a place for everything. I want to teach my students how to manage their belongings, so they can focus on what they are learning.
I hope by teaching them to be physically organized, they can learn to transfer their skills to be mentally organized.
Often times, when my students see too many things at once, they immediately get overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. By teaching my students to be organized, I can teach them where to begin and how to sort and manage their disorganization so they can become successful students. My hope is to build strong organizations skills in my students so they can be independent and effective learners.
