Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm proud to say that I work at the school that I attended as a child. It is a high poverty, Title I school in New York. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom.
They struggle personally and academically and have diverse needs. My class consists of general education students and children who receive special education services. Students living in homeless shelters travel from other parts of the city to our school every day. Families that are new to the country (English new language learners) have the added burden of learning to communicate in English.
Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are filled with energy, are happy, and are motivated to learn. They are scientists, singers, mathematicians, leaders, comedians, readers, writers, teachers, dancers, me, and you; they are everything!
My goal is to make my students' school environment comfortable and their learning experiences, creative and challenging to prepare them for the future. I want my students to feel safe from the outside world, so they can focus on learning and simply being kids.
My Project
Representation matters! More now than ever, my students are seeing themselves as scientists, engineers, artists...you name it! There's one thing that they spend plenty of time on- Tik Tok. It's hard to compete with these short engaging, mostly dance videos that occupy lots of space in my third graders' mind.
The If/Then resources gave me an idea to fuse science with Tik Tok by having the children learn to code robots to dance like they do on Tik Toc.
I will show the video Mission Impossible as and introduction and Robots Learn to Interact With Humans to show them some of the ways robots are used daily.
This project includes robots that can be coded to interact with each other, play catch and dance along with many other things. It also includes protective cases to keep them safe from harm.
